Choice #3: Preventing Displacement and/or Homelessness

Clara is proud to have owned her home for four decades, but she’s long been wary of how the neighborhood has changed in that time. What was once a thriving and historically Black neighborhood — having begun with the descendants of enslaved people who built and maintained UNC — has become a highly gentrified area comprised of Black homeowners and student housing, of which 80% are white.

Clara feels like developers are buying her neighbor’s homes left and right. She doesn’t want to quit this community but with her new life circumstances, she just can’t afford to pay her increased annual taxes and maintain her home at the same time.

She needs to make some big decisions about her beloved home, and quickly. Help Clara make the right choice for her family’s situation.
