Student U is seeking volunteers who want to tutor students in several grades! Please visit their volunteer website to view all details and safety guidelines being taken due to COVID-19

Student U is a community organization that works to empower and equip first-generation college students in Durham Public Schools, their families, and educators.  During the school year, a portion of this work is through our tutoring program for our middle and high school students.  Generally, tutoring takes place at the W.G. Pearson Center, daily, during our Year-Round Program for our middle school students and on Tuesday and Thursday evenings for our high school students.  Due to COVID-19, we will be hosting tutoring on a virtual platform throughout the spring semester.  Tutoring will occur Monday-Friday, from 3:00pm-6:00pm for our middle and high school students.  Wednesdays and Fridays will be flexible workdays so the tutoring times will vary.  All DPS students are participating in virtual learning with their school so it is imperative that we have volunteers throughout the week during all of the allotted times.  We are asking volunteers to commit to tutoring at least one day per week for the semester.  Tutoring will be organized using Zoom breakout rooms and students will have the option to work 1-on-1 with a tutor, in a small group session, and/or with peer groups.  The main goal for our volunteer tutors is to help our students both complete and understand their homework.

Virtual tutoring has begun. If you are still interested in supporting Student U students with your service of time and skills, please complete our Volunteer Tutor Survey as soon as possible and expect to hear from our Tutor Coordinator within 48 hours after completion.  If you have any specific questions, please contact Faith Nelson at faith.nelson@studentudurham.org.  We look forward to working with you!
